Electives - Master
Are you considering studying sustainability management in depth as part of your master's degree? We offer an exciting curriculum covering a wide range of aspects of sustainability management.
Module Structure
In three modules of 8 ECTS credits or 4 SWS (plus a project work module worth a further 8 ECTS credits and the master's thesis), you can specialize comprehensively in this important area of modern business administration or, by taking individual modules, develop additional knowledge for a broad management education. A prerequisite for participation in the following modules is a solid basic knowledge of sustainability management/CSR (e.g., from the bachelor's program at our faculty—see module BW43—or from comparable modules at other universities). For information on how to demonstrate that you meet these requirements, please refer to our FAQ.
Building on this knowledge, you can choose the modules MW57 “Sustainability Management Research,” MW58 “Sustainability Management Instruments,” and MW59 “Sustainability Management Practice.” All three modules are seminar-based. In addition, you can complete the project module MQ and your research-oriented master's thesis at our chair with reference to various aspects of sustainability management. Before registering for the master's thesis, we strongly recommend that you attend the MW57 module.
An absolute prerequisite for participation is either the successful completion of module BW43 “Sustainability Management” in our bachelor's program or module MW57 “Sustainability Management Research,” or proof of knowledge from comparable modules at another university worth at least 4 ECTS credits.
In MW57, we deal with current research in the field of sustainability management. In addition to providing an in-depth insight into current research topics in sustainability management, the course focuses on the criteria for good scientific work and writing. In MW57, you will become fictional reviewers of scientific papers in the field of sustainability management. Building on introductory presentations and independent literature studies on scientific quality criteria and publication processes, you will examine current empirical studies on sustainability management. In various steps, the quality of research papers will be discussed in group work, presentations, and plenary discussions, and you will independently assess the respective research contribution of the studies and make suggestions for improvement. We particularly recommend this module to students who are considering writing a master's thesis at our chair.
The module can be completed in one semester (examination: other examination; written paper and presentation). The course language is English. Please check the relevant subpage for semester planning to see whether we are offering the module in the current or coming semester.
An absolute prerequisite for participation is either the successful completion of module BW43 “Sustainability Management” in our bachelor's program or module MW57 “Sustainability Management Research,” or proof of knowledge from comparable modules at another university worth at least 6 ECTS credits.
MW58 delves deeper into selected advanced sustainability management tools (life cycle assessment). First, the conceptual foundations and functionalities of selected sustainability management tools are discussed. Building on this knowledge, you will work in teams on realistic use cases for the tools discussed and test their use in a realistic setting. Based on the insights gained, you will develop recommendations for sustainability management.

MW59 focuses on current practical business issues in the field of sustainability management. In this module, you will become fictional managers and consultants in the field of corporate sustainability management. Working in teams and under supervision, you will develop recommendations for current issues in sustainability management. This will be based on existing knowledge of sustainability management methods and tools and on subsequent in-depth, topic-specific research. To this end, real-life business challenges and case studies will be analyzed and tailored solution strategies will be developed, presented, and discussed.
