Topics

The general topics in which we will supervise final theses in the upcoming semester will be announced on the German version of this website no later than the start of the registration period.

Please Note: The topics mentioned in the German version of this website are only broad topic areas! The exact topic will be defined together once supervision has been confirmed. If you wish to propose your own topic, please contact the chair in good time – at least five weeks before the end of the registration period (see above) – and provide concrete topic formulation, a research question, and an indication of the intended researchmethod, so that we can assess the feasibility together with you. Before getting in touch, please therefore already consider the following questions: Which academic research question do I want to address in my thesis? Which methods can I use to answer this question?

Ending Notes

Before registering for a final thesis, you must already possess sufficient knowledge of how to design and write academic papers and the essential elements of academic research methods. It is crucial that you familiarize yourself with the relevant procedures, rules, and quality criteria at an early stage. For this purpose, the library offers and extensive range of helpful literature. We strongly recommend engaging with these fundamentals thoroughly and well in Advance. For bachelor’s Theses, we recommend having completed a BQ course at our chair beforehand. For master’s Theses, prior completion of the module MW57 (and, if desired additionally on of our MQ courses) is highly advisable.

It is expected that all relevant research channels are used when writing academic papers. These include recognised scientific journal databases (e.g. Web of Knowledge/SSCI, EBSCO, JSTOR, ScienceDirect, etc.) many which can be accessed via the university network or through a VPN client! Through the university network, you can access most articles free of charge either via the respective databases or directly through the publishers’ and journals’ websites. Comprehensive information is provided on the ULB webpages, as well as on the ZIM webpages regarding the technical requirements (VPN etc.).

Please make sure to follow precisely the separate guidelines for writing academic papers (see the linked PDF on this page)! These guidelines contain detailed information on the general procedure, on formal requirements, and on preparing the exposé proceeding the thesis. Anything not specified in this document is currently not subject to any special regulations at our chair. Submissions that do not fully comply with the formal requirements will be downgraded depending on the severity of the deviations.

Data Protection Regulations

If you are writing a project or final thesis involving empirical data collection with us, you need to complete the form linked here and take note of the data protection regulations provided there. Non-empirical theses do not need to be registered. Consult your supervisor if such registrations is required in your case regarding data protection matters.
